In an effort to get noticed by Lorne Michaels and other SNL recruiters, many Chicago comedy performers are no longer working their way up the iO and Second City ranks, and instead doing their own solo sketch shows at smaller venues like the Upstairs Gallery. Audiences win because these solo shows are often boundary-pushing and hilarious, but is this self-first strategy killing the group-think ethos that has put Chicago comedy on the map?
